A geeks guide to the naming of The Smercote Lounge!
Smercote was the original area as mentioned in the Doomsday Book that identified the area where the Newdicate Club is located, which at the time was a village of just one household with two villagers.
It was in the hundred (a division of Warwickshire in Anglo-Saxon England) of Bumbelowe, an area that covered 30 places - [Monks] Kirby, Smeeton, Newbold [Revel], Newbold [-on-Avon], Churchover, Harborough [Magna and Parva], Newnham [Paddox], Wolvey, Burton [Hastings], Marston [Jabbett], Ansty, Foleshill, Weston [-in-Arden], Cestersover, Stretton [Baskerville], Bedworth, Newton, Brownsover, Wibtoft, Willey, Astley, Hopsford, Shilton, Bulkington, [Little] Lawford, Biggin, Barnacle, Bramcote, Smercote, Sole.
Some of these places no longer exist, it is also interesting that the largest of these places was Monks Kirby with a population of 81 households! Bedworth had a population of just 10 households.
